About UsCarmine Grieco: Writer, Personal Trainer, Yoga Teacher Carmine Grieco began his career in the fitness profession as a personal trainer in 1995, shortly before completing his B.S. in Exercise Science. Since then he has gone on to train hundreds of clients, publish 20+ fitness-related articles in magazines such as American Fitness, Hampton Roads Magazine, OnFitness, Personal Fitness Professional, Inside Business, Tidewater Women, Sharpman, Hampton Roads Health Journal and Mature Living News Magazine, manage a personal training center and create the Tidewater Fitness Association. Carmine recently returned from India where he was studying the traditional form of yoga at Yoga Vidya Gurukul (http://www.yogapoint.com) and is currently working on a doctoral degree in Human Movement Science at Old Dominion University. Carmine's training emphasis, both for himself and for his clientele, is focused on improving health and functionality to live a higher quality of life. The concept of Healthworks was born in 1996, shortly after I graduated from the University of Wyoming. At that time there were only a fraction of the number of personal trainers as there are today, but all of them seemed to be applying a sport-fitness type concept to their training. If it works for an athlete it should work for a non-athlete as well, right? Yes, but only if you want to be an athlete. Is this really the way you should train if you are seeking an optimally healthy and functional body (and mind as well)? It has always seemed to me the answer to this was an obvious no! Over the intervening years I continued working with clients, adapting my training style as I acquired new knowledge that fit into the larger scheme of what I considered health and wellness. As my knowledge of all aspects of health grew, my concept of overall wellness began to expand beyond the typical definitions. This expansion of thought led to two important events; 1) my interest in yoga and my subsequent trip to India to study yoga in an "immersion" style, and 2) the development of what I've termed Pro-Therapy fitness training.
Pro-Therapy is not therapy in the clinical sense of the word, nor is it designed to "treat" any specific condition. It is a system of pro-active strength, posture, balance, flexibility, breathing and cardiovascular exercises designed for optimal health and functionality of both the body and the mind. But you can think of it as the "apple a day that keeps the doctor away."
