What is a yoga session like?
A typical yoga session will be one hour in length and will begin with a few preparatory movements followed by Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutations) to prepare the body and the mind for the asanas (yogic postures) to come. A selection of 5-10 asanas (postures) will be selected by your yoga instructor based upon your physical needs and desires. Initially asanas will only be held for short periods of time (5-15 seconds), but as your body becomes attuned to the rhythm and demands of the asanas the "hold" time will be increased.
At the conclusion of asana practice you will take a brief rest period prior to pranayama, yogic breathing exercises. Pranayama helps to calm and focus the mind in preparation for the final facet of yoga practice, meditation. Contrary to what you might have heard about meditation it does not involve altered states of consciousness (unless you are a yoga master living in the Himalayas) and does not have to be done for hours on end to see a benefit. A typical meditation session will last from 5-10 minutes and will leave you feeling relaxed, focused and refreshed. Although this is the recommended and traditional style of yoga practice, all sessions are individualized for your needs and preferences.
What if I am not flexible?
If you are inflexible then yoga will be of even greater benefit to you. Being flexible is certainly not a prerequisite for yoga.
What are the rates for yoga?
For private and small group instruction the yoga rates are the same as the personal training rates.
